Lot 2977
Uncertain, 1st half of 8th century. Seal (Lead, 31 mm, 24.36 g, 12 h). Cruciform monogram containing K, ΓPV, NC and ΔΑⲰ. Rev. The Mother of God (?) standing facing, nimbate, holding a cross in her right hand, and a book of Gospels in her left; to left and right, cypress trees with the tops bending slightly towards her. A splendid and enigmatic seal, of the finest style of the period and struck on a large flan. Edge split, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The obverse of this seal is reminiscent of lot 2976 above, the wonderful seal of Theodosius III of Adramytium.
